Sharpen a vague client brief

Turn a loose client request into a clear creative brief with the right questions to ask back.

Recommended: BuilderPlanningCommunication

Best for

  • Freelance designers juggling several clients
  • Agency teams starting a new project
  • In-house designers receiving requests on chat

What you need

  • An AI assistant
  • The client's message or call notes
  • Any brand guidelines they have shared

Starter prompt

Copy it, fill in the parts in square brackets, and paste it into the AI assistant your organisation allows.

I am a [designer or creative] working on [project type] for [client type]. Below is what the client has told me. Turn it into a creative brief with: goal, audience, the one thing people should feel or do, deliverables and sizes, mandatory brand elements, tone, references, deadline and approval process. For any heading the notes do not cover, write the exact question I should ask the client, in a polite and short form I can send on WhatsApp or email. Client notes: [paste notes].

How to use it

  1. 1.Paste the request

  2. 2.Generate the brief

  3. 3.Ask back

  4. 4.Agree before you design

  1. 1

    Paste the request

Copy the client's messages and any call notes into one place. Include brand guidelines if you have them.

  2. 2

    Generate the brief

Run the prompt and read the questions first. These are the gaps that usually cause rework.

  3. 3

    Ask back

Send the questions to the client in one message. Update the brief once they reply.

  4. 4

    Agree before you design

Get the client to confirm the brief in writing before starting concepts.

Watch out. The assistant may fill gaps with assumptions that sound like the client's wishes. Only treat what the client confirmed as the brief.

What you end up with

A client-approved brief and far fewer rounds of rework.
